!Source: Phillips County News, Malta, MT, Published Thursday, Jan 19, 1961 (Via Ellen Barnard Cook) FORMER MISSOURI RIVER RANCHER BURIED IN RONAN Funeral services for Jehu O. Barnard, 84, Missouri river rancher and U.S. land commissioner in the southern part of the county form many years, were held at the Little White church Monday Afternoon. The body was taken to Ronan where interment rites were held at the family plot Wednesday. He died at the Malta hospital Jan. 12. Pallbearers were Maurice Reynolds, Saco; Lucien Reynolds, Hinsdale; Vince Barnard, Beaverton; Pat Menge, Beaverton; Don McNamara, Saco; George Wright, Hinsdale. Jehu Osmond Barnard was born at Meadows of Dan, Va., March 27, 1887, the son of Jehu and Adeline Wood Barnard. He was the third of 15 Children in the family. On Dec. 24, 1903, he was married to Virginia Banks. They came to Montana in 1910 and homesteaded on the Missouri river at Leedy, south of Malta. They made their home there until their land was sold to the government when Fort Peck dam was built in 1935. The Bernard's moved to Polson that year and lived there until 1957 when they returned to Malta. The deceased was educated in the public schools of Mayberry, VA., and attended business college at Roanoke, Roanoke Co., VA. He was U. S. land commissioner for the southern part of Phillips county from 1910 to 1935. He taught school in Virginia and was a dedicated gardener and was interested in governmental affairs throughout his life. Survivors are his wife, two daughters, Mrs. Roy Nieland (Myrtle) of Burke, Idaho and Mrs. Wade McNeil (Flora) of Malta; five sons, Lloyd of Saco, Somers of Saco, Monty of Polson, Howard of Malta and Eldon of Hinsdale; 22 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, eight brothers, three sisters and many nephews and nieces.
