There was an Elizabeth Cook (1796-1878) from Fayette County PA who married a James Hamer in 1832. It's possible that the Hamer marriage was her second, and she was married to John Brown first. The chronology works out fine, but it's utterly speculative on my part.
An American Genealogical Index entry on familysearch.org lists Elizabeth's birthdate as 1785. It also lists six kids from the marriage to John Brown: Jeremiah b. 1812, Eliza b. 1815, Hanna b.1816, Mary b. 1818, Susan b. 1820, Becky b. 1822. No details about the kids, no parents for EC or JB. It also lists JB's death date as 16 DEC 1864. One of the few things we have actual documented in all of this is that JB, father of Susan Brown, was alive for the 1870 Census. So maybe it was a different John Brown who married Elizabeth Cook. https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/2:1:9C8K-5H2
