Note
From John T Sanders: <http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/s/a/n/John-T-Sanders/GENE7-0006.html> JOHN4 BEREMAN ~ (THOMAS3 BERIMAN ~, LEONARD2 BERRYMAN ~, THOMAS1) was born Bet. 07 Jan 1733/34 - 07 Jan 1734/35 in Greenwich, Cumberland County, New Jersey, and died 07 Jan 1805 in Stoe Creek, Cumberland County, New Jersey. He married SARAH FITHIAN BATEMAN ~ 29 Mar 1757 in Greenwich, Cumberland County, New Jersey, daughter of THOMAS BATEMAN and SARAH FITHIAN. She was born 1739 in Greenwich, Cumberland County, New Jersey, and died 05 May 1804 in Stow Creek, Cumberland County, New Jersey. Notes for JOHN BEREMAN ~: From Howard S. Whitley's report of 10 June 1932, pp. 14-15: In two deeds (Cumberland County, Liber 3, page 196 and Liber 5, page 92), John refers to \"Thomas Berriman\" as his father. He deeded land to Mary and Sarah Loper (Liber 1, page 458, 1 October 1799, Stow Creek), to Abel Sheppard (Liber 3, page 196, 18 June 1801, Stow Creek), to Ezekiel Thomas (Liber 4, page 13, 22 March 1802, Hopewell), and to Abel Sheppard (Liber 5, page 92, 5 April 1803, Stow Creek). Both deeds to Abel Sheppard described the land as having been devised to John \"Berriman\" by his father Thomas \"Berriman\" by a will dated 7 March 1746-7, this land being part of a larger tract purchased by Thomas Berriman of William Biles or Billes. His wife is named Sarah in these deeds. In a volume entitled \"Court Records 1774 to 1783\" in the office of the County Clerk, Cumberland County, the name \"John Berriman\" occurs as ninth in a list of grand jurors for 25 November 1777, Court of General Quarter Sessions of the Peace and County Court. It also occurs, with the same spelling, in a list of grand jurors for the same court under the date 23 February 1779. In \"Miscellaneous Records A, Cumberland County,\" a paper relating to the \"First congregation of Seventh Day Baptists,\" dated 8 January 1790, is recorded as having been \"Signed & sealed in the presence of Noah Bowen, John Beriman, Inspectors.\" John was buried, according to F.D. Andrews (Tombstone Inscriptions) and to the New Jersey Historical Society Presbyterian Manuscript, in the old Presbyterian Burying Ground in Greenwich, N.J., under the inscription \"In memory of John Bereman who departed this life on the 7th day of January 1805 in the 71st year of his age.\" I have a photo of the stone [JTS -- 22 August 2000]. He died intestate, and his children are mentioned in the administration proceedings, dated 27 December 1805: Eli Bereman, Joel Bereman, Jonathan Bereman, Thomas Bereman, John Bereman, Sarah Johnson, Zurvior Reeves, and Mary Harris. A petition of Joel Bereman and Eli Bereman for division of the real estate (in Stow Creek Township) was dated 18 September 1805. They had been named as administrators of John Bereman's estate in a bond signed 4 February 1805. These papers are recorded in the Orphans Court Minutes, Cumberland County, B-116, 117; B-141; and B-151 and 162. The original papers are filed in an envelope in a metal drawer No. 6, near the rear end of the drawer [from Howard S. Whitley's report of 10 June 1932, p. 19]. The actual division of the land is indicated in a map (p. 109 of a volume in the Surrogate's Office, Cumberland County, entitled \"Maps of Divisions\"), which shows that the land was divided into adjacent strips which were alloted in the following order: Eli Bereman, Joel Bereman, Jonathan Bereman, Thomas Bereman, John Bereman, Sarah Johnson, Zurvior Reeves, Representatives of Mary Harris dec'd. Most of the siblings then in November 1806 gave power of attorney to Joel to sell their shares of the property, which he accomplished at least in the case of Jonathan (31 May 1808), Eli (same date), himself (30 June 1808), and Zurvior (31 March 1810) [from a document received at the County Clerk's office 22 November 1806 and recorded 24 November 1806, possibly a volume entitled \"Miscellaneous Records A\", and from other public documents as cited in Howard S. Whitley's report of 10 June 1932, pp. 19-21]. From Norm Berreman's FTW file, and from Walter S. Sheppard Jr. of Philadelphia, \"The Berryman Family of South Jersey\", in The Vineland Historical Magazine, Volume XXXI, Number 1-2, January-April 1946, pp. 15-21, p. 19: \"The Latter Day Saints records indicate that JB was born about 1728 in Greenwich, Cumberland County, New Jersey. Abner Catlin Martin is identified as a relative. Abner was married to Bridget Van Wiggan.. JB was one of seven children with the other six being girls. His birth was late enough that one must suspect that his parents Thomas and Martha must have tried for a son some time. The daughters' names indicate a Biblical cast to the family and its upbringing. The family was Presbyterian Batch/fim no. 0170631 \"JB's father died when he was fifteen leaving JB his sole male heir. While JB probably inherited the farm, it is likely that he depended on friends and relatives for his first years. His mother was still alive at the time. In 1759 JB was involved in the will of a William Payne who conceivably was related to his mother. \"JB married Sarah Fithian Bateman the daughter of a well established area family on 29 March 1757. She would have been eighteen, an indication of an arranged marriage. They had at least nine children between them. There is not much evidence that children beyond the youngest son Joel receive any significant education \"JB was a farmer who on the September 1779 tax list was recorded as owning 155 acres, 4 horses, 4 cattle, and 7 hogs. This would have been more prosperous than many of his contemporaries but far from the most wealthy man in his neighborhood. Given the size of his family and the six male offsprings, this was not much to offer his children and might explain why so many of them left the area in the 1790s and 1800s. \"JB lived until his death on 7 January 1805. He was said to have still resided on his farm on Stoe Creek, Cumberland County at the time. His wife Sarah had died in May of the preceeding year. By this time of his death all of JB's sons except his youngest son Joel had move to Kentucky (Jonathan only) or Ohio. Joel was probably in Ohio by the following year. \"Name identified as John Berryman per vol.31 Vineland Historical Magazine. John was fellowbondsman to his brother-in-law Ezekiel Bennett in the guardianship of his niece Elizabeth Reeves, and to his wife's young brother Thomas Bateman. vol. 31 John died intestate; inventory 9 Feb. 1805, appraisers Azariah More, Jr. and Noah Harris, and his sons Joel and Eli, took bond as administrators 4 Feb. 1805. Witnesses, Noah Harris and Johnson Reeves. \"The administrators petitioned the Orphans' Court on 18 Sept. 1805, for the court to appoint an impartial person to divide the estate in the Township of Stow Creek, since estate can not be settled by agreement due to minority of some of the heirs. 20 Feb. 1806 the court appointed Azariah More, David Ayars and Ebenezer Davis. They divided the property between the following heirs: Representatives of Mary Harris, deceased, wife of Robert Harris, Zurviah Reeves, wife of Johnson Reeves, Sara Johnson, wife of Enos Johnson, Thomas Berryman, Jonathn Berryman, Joel Berryman, John Berryman , and Eli Berryman. Account of administration of Joel is also attached. \"Name of family spelled Bereman in records of Greenwich Presbyterian church in book Early Records of Cumberland,Co.NJ author Charlotte Meldrum publisher Family Line Publications, Westminster, Md. 1998. \"Source Early Records of Cumberland Co.
